Euthanasia
Compassionate Guidance During a Difficult Time
At Town and Country Animal Hospital, we understand how deeply bonded you are to your pet.
Deciding to say goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest decisions an owner can face. Our team is here to support you with compassion, respect, and understanding every step of the way. This page is meant to help answer common questions, explain what to expect, and provide comfort as you consider what is best for your pet.
When Is Euthanasia Considered?
Euthanasia may be considered when a pet’s quality of life has declined and medical treatment is no longer able to keep them comfortable or happy. Some common reasons include:
- Chronic pain or discomfort that cannot be managed
- Advanced illness or terminal disease
- Significant decline in mobility, appetite, or enjoyment of daily activities
- Difficulty breathing or frequent distress
If you are unsure, our veterinarians are happy to discuss your pet’s condition and help you evaluate quality of life together.
Quality of Life
Quality of life is unique to every pet and family. We often look at factors such as:
- Comfort and pain level
- Ability to eat, drink, and move comfortably
- Interest in favorite activities or interaction with family
- Overall dignity and well-being
Our goal is always to prevent unnecessary suffering while honoring the bond you share with your pet.
Quality of Life Assessment
Deciding when it may be time can feel overwhelming. A Quality of Life Assessment can help guide this decision by objectively evaluating your pet’s comfort, daily function, and overall happiness.
We encourage owners to review and complete a Quality of Life Assessment prior to their appointment or when considering next steps. This tool can help facilitate thoughtful discussion with your family and our veterinary team.
What to Expect During the Appointment
We strive to make this experience as peaceful and gentle as possible.
- Time and Privacy
You will be given time with your pet in a quiet, comfortable setting. You may stay with your pet for the entire process if you wish. - Sedation
Most pets receive a sedative first to help them relax and fall into a deep, peaceful sleep. - Euthanasia Medication
Once your pet is fully asleep, a medication is administered that allows them to pass calmly and painlessly. - Aftercare
We will give you as much time as you need afterward to say goodbye.
Our staff will explain each step and answer any questions you may have.
Being Present
There is no right or wrong choice when it comes to being present. Some families find comfort in staying with their pet, while others prefer to remember them as they were before the appointment. Whatever you decide, please know it is okay.
Aftercare Options
We will review aftercare options with you prior to the appointment, which may include:
- Private cremation – Your pet is cremated individually. You may choose from two urn options, or you may elect to receive your pet’s ashes returned to you without an urn.

- Communal cremation – Your pet is cremated with other pets, and no remains are returned to the family.

If you have specific wishes or questions, please let us know—we are here to support you during this time.
Supporting Yourself and Your Family
Grieving the loss of a pet is a very real and valid experience. It is normal to feel sadness, guilt, or even relief that your pet is no longer suffering. Be gentle with yourself and allow time to heal.
If you would like, we can provide information on pet loss support resources, including pet-loss.net, which offers grief support, chat rooms, and memorial options for pet owners.
We Are Here for You
Please do not hesitate to contact our team with questions or concerns. Whether you are seeking guidance, need help deciding next steps, or simply need reassurance, we are honored to support you and your pet during this difficult time.
Your pet has been a cherished member of your family, and it is our privilege to help provide them with a peaceful and dignified goodbye.
